Why Should You Become A Volunteer Firefighter?

You have a personal desire to serve and protect the community for fire and rescue needs. The philosophy of neighbor helping neighbor is a strong thread among the volunteers.

Training Requirements

During the first six months, a firefighter must complete an approved basic fire-fighting course. Firefighters are required to have a total of 120 training hours per year. Fire training is held on the second and fourth Thursday nights of the month and four Saturdays per year.

Training Courses

Examples of training classes include:
*Pump Practices  *Hose Practice
*Fire Fighter’s Terminology
*Firefighter’s Laws  *Explosives
*Industrial Fire Protection
*Defensive Drive *Basic Rescue
*Codes and Standards *First Aid

Fire Safety Tips

*Check your smoke alarms biannually; batteries should be changed twice a year. Remember to change them when the time changes!

*Be sure your numerical address is in plain sight and easy to read for emergency responders. Four-inch numbers/letters are preferable.

*Prior to doing any outdoor burning, you must obtain a burn permit number from the GA Fire Commission at 333-5267. Outdoor burning is permitted only from sun-up to sun-down.
Outside Burning Requirements

*Ensure that a water hose is near the fire in case it gets out of control. An adult(s) must be present.

Benefits

Firefighters’ pay is based on two monthly night training sessions (three hours each) at $15.00 each session with a total of 24 sessions per year. There are six Saturday training sessions (8 hours each) at $20.00 each session. This meets the 120 hours required per year for training.

The City of Hahira pays the cost to enroll firefighters into the Georgia Firefighters Pension Plan at $15.00 per month per firefighter. Firefighters who remain in good standing under the retirement system are required to attend at least 96 hours of training a year and respond to at least 50% of all fire calls.

Once firefighters reach 15 years of service they are vested into the retirement system. At the 25 year mark, they will be eligible for full retirement. In addition, if they are disabled in the line of duty they will receive payments from the retirement system. If they are killed in the line of duty their dependents will receive all the money that has been paid into the retirement.

Did You Know?

More people are killed by smoke and toxic gases than by fire.

If smoke enters a room, get close to the floor and crawl to safety.

Two-thirds of all accidental fires in the home occur at night between 8:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m.

Fire is the #1 killer of youngsters under the age of 14 in the home.
